June 11, 2026 — Thursday Edition

Happy Thursday, Durham. The whole world starts keeping our hours today: the 2026 World Cup kicks off, and for the next month Durham’s mornings and evenings belong to soccer. The USMNT plays its opener Friday, Hamilton takes its genuinely-final bow at DPAC this weekend, and the patios stay warm and full. Let’s go.

What’s Up Durham

  • The World Cup kicks off today. The first-ever 48-team tournament opens June 11 and runs through July across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico — and the USMNT plays its opener vs. Paraguay tomorrow (Friday, June 12). Durham’s about to keep European hours; more in the Spotlight. (FIFA)

  • 🎭 Hamilton’s genuinely-final bow. After a month at DPAC, the show closes Sunday, June 14. This is the last weekend, full stop — midweek seats and the Sunday matinee are your best and last shot. From $52. (DPAC)

  • 💃 The American Dance Festival rolls on. ADF’s 93rd season is in full swing at Duke with a fresh slate of companies this week — summer here is as much an arts season as a baseball one. (ADF)

  • The Bulls come home Tuesday. A six-game homestand vs. the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opens June 16 at the DBAP, with a loaded promo slate through Father’s Day. Grab seats now. (Bulls schedule)

Event Spotlight: The World Cup Comes to the Bull City

For the next month, the biggest sporting event on the planet is being played in our time zone — and Durham, a real soccer town hiding inside a baseball one, is ready for it. The 2026 World Cup kicks off today: the first to feature 48 teams and the first hosted across three countries, with games close enough that a Saturday road trip to a host city is genuinely on the table.

The home story starts tomorrow. The USMNT opens its group against Paraguay on Friday, June 12, then plays Australia the following Friday (June 19) and Turkey to close the group. With most matches landing in the afternoon and evening here, watch parties are about to become the default weekend plan — American Tobacco Campus is hosting big-screen gatherings, and the city’s soccer bars will be standing-room by kickoff.

Our pick for where to watch is in the Short List below — but however you do it, this is a rare window when the whole world is on Durham time. Find a screen, find a crowd, and let the place go loud.

📅 June 11 – July 19, 2026 · USMNT vs. Paraguay Friday, June 12 · Watch parties citywide

Food & Drink Roundup

Monuts is your World Cup breakfast. Early kickoffs call for a plan, and the beloved downtown donut-and-biscuit shop on Foster Street has the sausage biscuit, the cake donuts, and the cold brew to power a morning of group-stage soccer. Go early — the weekend line is real. (Monuts)

Watch for Jean’s “By The Sea.” The hot-dog-stand-turned-oyster-shack has been inching toward an opening, and oyster season plus summer is exactly its moment. Worth a drive-by to see if the lights are on. (Bites of Bull City)

Patio season, soccer edition. Half the fun of a 4 p.m. kickoff is doing it outside. Find a yard with a screen, a cold pitcher, and some shade — then stay through the evening match. June rewards it.

The Short List

  • World Cup at The Boot Room · Starts Fri, June 12 (USMNT vs. Paraguay). Durham’s soccer pub — and the local American Outlaws bar — puts matches on every screen, indoors and out, with morning kickoffs and a real crowd. Our pick for where to watch the tournament. (The Boot Room)

  • 🎭 Hamilton — Final Performances · Through Sun, June 14, DPAC. Truly the last weekend. From $52. (DPAC)

  • 🎸 Dead Calm · Sat, June 13, Motorco Music Hall. Loud and cathartic in our favorite 500-cap room. (Motorco)

  • 🎶 Marisa Anderson · Sat, June 13, The Pinhook. Hypnotic solo guitar that rewards close listening. (The Pinhook)

  • 🍓 Durham Farmers’ Market · Sat, June 13, 8 a.m.–noon, Durham Central Park. Blueberries, the first tomatoes, and squash for days. (durhamfarmersmarket.com)

Bulls Corner

The road trip’s almost over. The Bulls return to the DBAP Tuesday, June 16 for six against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, and the promo slate is worth circling: African American Heritage Night Friday (6/19), Miracle League Night Saturday (6/20), and a Father’s Day matinee Sunday (6/21). A perfect week to plan a ballpark night.

Weekend Weather

Summer, settled: highs in the mid-80s with plenty of sun Friday through Sunday, comfortable low-to-mid 60s overnight. Translation — a patio-and-watch-party weekend. Do outdoor errands in the morning, find shade and a screen for the afternoon matches, and let the long evenings stretch. (Sanity-check NWS before publishing.)

Durham Love Note

There’s a specific magic to a World Cup summer in a city that already knows how to gather. For the next month, strangers in replica kits will pack into the same rooms, groan at the same missed chances, and high-five people they’ve never met over a goal scored four states away. Durham is good at that — at turning a screen and a crowd into a block party. So pick a team that isn’t yours, learn one player’s name, and go be part of the noise. The whole world’s on our clock for once. Let’s enjoy it.

Much love, Durham. 🐂
