July 7, 2026 — Tuesday Edition
Happy Tuesday, Durham. The sparklers are out, the recycling bins are full of watermelon rinds, and the whole city has that pleasant post-holiday quiet to it. The USMNT's World Cup run ended Monday night — more on that below — but summer rolls on: the Bulls hit the road in first place, Ninth Street is getting some (noisy) TLC, and we found the exact right dessert for a week like this. Let's get into it.
What's Up Durham
⚽ The USMNT's World Cup run is over. Belgium ended it Monday night in Seattle, 4–1 in the Round of 16 — a Malik Tillman free kick briefly tied it before Charles De Ketelaere and company pulled away. A rough final score for a team that gave us a genuinely fun month of watch parties. Thanks for the memories, boys — and thanks to every Durham bar that turned into a soccer pub since June 11. (ESPN)
🚧 Ninth Street is down a lane. Sewer work kicked off Monday, closing the northbound lane of Ninth between W. Markham and W. Club through about July 18. And starting Friday at 7 PM, the Hillandale Road/W. Club Boulevard intersection closes to through traffic for sewer-line work of its own. Plan a couple extra minutes — and maybe see the spotlight below for a reason to park and walk Ninth anyway. (City of Durham)
⚾ The Bulls left town in first place. After the July 4 homestand, the club packed up for a road swing at Jacksonville. They'll be back at the DBAP July 17 — fireworks included. Details in Bulls Corner.
🥵 The heat isn't done with us. More mid-summer swelter this week. Hydrate, check on neighbors, and treat air conditioning as a group activity.
Restaurant Spotlight: Pincho Loco
There is one correct response to a Durham July, and it's been sitting on Ninth Street this whole time. Pincho Loco is the Bull City's Mexican-style ice cream shop — homemade paletas and scoops in flavors that run from mango con chile to corn to horchata, made in-house and priced like a neighborhood spot because that's exactly what it is.
Here's the pitch this week: with the sewer work chewing up a lane of Ninth Street through mid-July, the businesses along the strip could use the foot traffic. So park once, take the sidewalk, and end at the counter. Order something you can't get at a grocery store — the chile-dusted fruit flavors are the move — and eat it slowly in the shade like a person with nowhere to be. That's July done right.

Nerra is (finally) nearly here. The seafood-focused concept from Chef Lex — bar, fresh catch, and provisions — is prepping to launch this month in the former Krill space on Ramseur Street. Bulls Corner
The Bulls took first place on the road with them: after wrapping the holiday homestand against Gwinnett on Sunday, the club opened a road series at Jacksonville. Next home game is Friday, July 17 vs. Charlotte — with fireworks. We'll have the full homestand rundown next week.

Durham Love Note
There's a specific quiet that settles over Durham the week after the Fourth. The out-of-towners go home, the calendar exhales, and the city gets back to its regular summer rhythm — sprinklers ticking, cicadas going, somebody's charcoal grill working overtime two doors down. Nothing is happening, in the best possible way. We spend so much of the year chasing the big weekends that it's easy to miss this part: the ordinary Tuesday when the whole city smells like cut grass and it's still light out at 8:45. Don't miss it. Pour something cold and sit outside.
