Happy Tuesday, Durham. The lull is over: the Bulls are back at the DBAP tonight for a full week, the World Cup is in full swing with the USMNT playing Friday, and Durham’s biggest June weekend — Juneteenth — is right around the corner. It’s hot, it’s loud, and there’s a lot to get to. Let’s go.
What’s Up Durham
⚾ The Bulls are home — starting tonight. A six-game homestand vs. the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp runs June 16–21 at the DBAP, opening tonight with Tendies & Tallboys. The promo slate gets better all week; details in Bulls Corner. (Bulls schedule)
🏙️ A rooftop restaurant is coming to 555 Mangum. The Ibarra family is opening The Lenny on the 11th floor — shareable small plates, an agave-forward cocktail list, and a downtown skyline view. Targeting this summer. (WRAL)

Restaurant Spotlight: Pizzeria Toro
Some restaurants you plan around; Pizzeria Toro is one you fall into — and then can’t stop returning to. The downtown wood-fired-pizza room on East Chapel Hill Street has been a Durham favorite for years, and on a warm June night with a ballgame and a World Cup match both on the calendar, it’s exactly the kind of easy, no-fuss dinner the season calls for.
The model is simple and a little stubborn: no reservations, first-come-first-served, and a menu that changes with what’s good. Blistered, charred-edge pies come out of the oven fast; the seasonal snacks and salads are worth ordering two of; and the Italian wine list is deep without being precious. Put your name in, get a drink at the bar, and let the room do the rest.
It’s a five-minute walk from the DBAP, which makes it the platonic pre-Bulls dinner — eat early, walk over, catch first pitch. Or do it backwards: late pie, cold wine, a match on somewhere nearby.
Insider tip: no reservations, so go early or go late — the in-between is when the wait bites. Bar seating is first-come and often the fastest way in.

Food & Drink Roundup
East of Texas is bringing brisket to American Tobacco. The Winston-Salem Tex-Mex-and-barbecue favorite is opening its second location in ATC’s Reed Building this summer — smoked meats and frozen margaritas three minutes from the ballpark. A very correct use of that space. (NC Triangle Dining)

Bulls Corner
They’re home. The Bulls open a six-game homestand vs. the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp tonight (June 16) and play through Sunday, and the week is loaded: Tendies & Tallboys tonight, a noon day game Wednesday (6/17), African American Heritage Night Friday (6/19), Miracle League Night Saturday (6/20), and a Father’s Day matinee Sunday (6/21). Grab a midweek seat while they’re easy to get.
Weekend Weather
Hot and bright: highs in the upper 80s much of the week, with a chance of showers and storms Friday before the weekend clears back to sunny and a touch less humid.
