October 20, 2026 — Tuesday Edition
Happy Tuesday, Durham. Saturday hurt. Duke climbed out of a 17-0 hole, took the lead with four and a half minutes left, and watched the Victory Bell ride back up 15-501 anyway. The consolation prize arrives tonight: the No. 2 team in the country opens its season in Cameron. Elsewhere, the sun is out every single day this week, the lakes are lower than we'd like, and the spotlight is an Italian place in Sutton Station with a fountain on the patio and s'mores for the kids. Let's get into it.
What's Up Durham
🏀 Basketball is back tonight, and it's a top-10 game. Duke, ranked No. 2 in Monday's preseason AP poll, hosts No. 8 Tennessee in an exhibition at Cameron at 7, on ACC Network. Exhibition is a technicality: Duke has won 32 straight at home, Jon Scheyer's teams are 63-3 in the building, and these are the only two programs to reach the Elite Eight in each of the last three NCAA Tournaments. Patrick Ngongba II and John Blackwell were both named Preseason All-ACC first team, and freshman Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje is the league's preseason Rookie of the Year. The real road test is Sunday at Kansas. (Duke)
💧 The lakes are at 37 percent. Durham's water supply snapshot, updated Sunday, puts reservoir storage at 37 percent full with an estimated 90 days of supply, and the city is still in Stage 2 restrictions, as it has been since June 15. That means no spray irrigation and no washing the car in the driveway. With no rain in the forecast for at least a week, this is a good time to be boring about your water use. (City of Durham)
🎸 Beck comes to DPAC next Tuesday. October 27, 8 PM, with Ioanna Gika and Wayne Faler opening, and DPAC has it flagged as going fast. If you'd rather have a bassist than a guitar hero that night, Christian McBride brings his quintet Ursa Major to Duke Arts Presents at 7:30. Two Grammy winners, one Tuesday, a mile apart. (DPAC · Duke Arts)
🎃 Halloween week is taking shape. Mark these now: the Museum of Life and Science's 21-and-up AfterHours "Science of Fear" is Thursday the 29th, 6:30 to 10, $45. The ninth annual Rocky Horror Halloween Ball plays the Carolina Theatre Friday and Saturday the 30th and 31st at 7:30, $15, full theatrical staging. BooFest at the museum is Halloween morning only this year, 10 to 3, included with admission. And Cattyrompus, Sleepy Fest's fifth-birthday Halloween party, takes over The Pinhook and Rubies on Five Points from 2 PM to 2 AM on the 31st, with a $30 day pass (kids 10 and under free) and a $15 night pass. More on each as we get closer. (Museum · Carolina Theatre · Cattyrompus)
Restaurant Spotlight: Cucciolo Famiglia
The third Cucciolo isn't downtown and isn't trying to be. It's in a shopping center on Fayetteville Road, it has toys on the patio, and that is entirely the point.
Cucciolo Famiglia opened in Sutton Station in late August of last year, from Jimmy Kim and partners Josh Womer and Andrew Robinson, the crew behind Cucciolo Osteria on Main Street and Cucciolo Terrazza up in Raleigh. Kim lives in South Durham. He picked the space for two reasons: a big kitchen that was already there, and a courtyard patio he could turn into something. He did. There's greenery, a fountain, heaters for nights like the ones coming this week, and a bin of games and toys so parents can finish a glass of wine while the kids negotiate over a cornhole bag. The name is the mission statement — he's said he wants it to feel like "a giant family."
Inside it's an open, bistro-style room, warm and loud in the good way. The menu leans classic Italian-American without apologizing for it. Start with the calamari fritti or the salami board. Then: the vodka tomato cream rigatoni, which is the dish people come back for, or the white ragu rigatoni if you want the quieter, deeper version. The chicken Parmesan is built off the Osteria's cult butter chicken, which tells you everything. Veal marsala and salmon piccata round out the back half. Expect to spend $31 to $50 a head with a drink.
And drink: bar manager Matt Barker's list is more playful than the food. The Pistachio Lemon Sour is the one to order first; the Strawberry Milk Punch comes with strawberry "caviar" and pineapple chips, and the Grapefruit Spritz arrives with a torched rosemary sprig. There's also an off-menu house shrub for anyone not drinking — ask.
Pro tip: Wednesday is kids' night — free s'mores. There's no take-out, patio walk-ins are limited, and the reservation book fills on weekends, so grab a table on OpenTable. A private room seats 30 if the holiday-party email thread has started.

Food & Drink Roundup
🧟 A Halloween bar under the distillery. Durham Distillery's Conniption Bar, through the rear lower-level door at 715 Washington, has turned into "Corpse Reviver: Back from the Dead" through November 1 — the city's original Halloween cocktail pop-up. Drinks are $14 (the Gabaghoul, the Old Gregg) or $30 if you want to keep the tiki mug. Wednesday to Saturday 4 to 11, Sunday 3 to 9, and Thursdays add a build-your-own flight of three mini martinis for $19, with cheese straws. Tomorrow night there's also a one-off, 40-seat "Court of Corks & Cocktails" tasting for the romantasy readers, $75, costumes encouraged. (Durham Distillery)
🍔 The best burger in North Carolina is expanding, finally. A travel publication just named Bull City Burger and Brewery the state's best burger, and owner Seth Gross used the moment to announce the first new location in the restaurant's 15 years: Bull City Burger Outpost #1, at Latta Park on Guess Road in North Durham. Think 65 seats, a patio with a turf playground, burgers and beer plus soft serve and breakfast biscuits, no brewing on site. Target is early 2027. (Hoodline)
🍣 M Nikkei is slated for next week. Chef Mike Lee closed M Pocha at Five Points in June to rebuild the room as a Japanese-Peruvian robatayaki and hand-roll bar, with a curved sushi-style counter and a few Pocha favorites kept on. The opening tracker at NC Triangle Dining now has it at October 29 at 101 E. Chapel Hill Street. It was originally promised for July, so we'll believe the date when the door opens — but it's close. Sidelines
The Bell is back in Chapel Hill. North Carolina 24, Duke 20, in front of 35,018 at Wallace Wade. Duke spent the first quarter and a half getting pushed around, then got a 9-yard fumble-return touchdown from Andrew Pellicciotta, two Gavin Strange field goals and a 7-yard Walker Eget-to-Nate Sheppard score to lead 20-17 with 4:39 left. Carolina went 78 yards in 2:41 and Jaylen McGill ran it in from 24 out. Duke's last drive ended in an interception. The numbers say Duke should have won it — 373 yards to 326, eight third-down conversions to four — and Sheppard's 11 catches tied the fifth-most ever by a Duke running back. Duke is 4-2, two straight losses by a combined seven points, and plays Friday night at Virginia, 7 PM (ESPN, per Duke). Boston College visits Halloween Saturday at noon on The CW. NCCU (2-5) comes off its bye and opens MEAC play Friday at Delaware State, 5 PM on ESPN2; Howard comes to O'Kelly-Riddick on the 31st at 2. Duke women's soccer, ranked sixth, won 5-0 at SMU and is 8-1-4 heading into Senior Night Saturday at 5 against NC State. And the women's basketball team is No. 4 in its own preseason poll, with the opener November 3 at Cameron. (Duke · NCCU)
Weekend Weather
The week-ahead version, and it's one note played seven times: sun. Today, sunny and low 70s with a north breeze gusting to 20. Wednesday, sunny, around 70, with the coldest night of the week behind it — lower 40s. Thursday low 70s, Friday upper 60s, Saturday sunny and mid 60s, with Saturday night back in the lower 40s, so the 5 PM soccer kickoff is sweater weather and the 6:45 tea is jacket weather. Sunday, around 70. Monday, mid 70s. There is no rain in this forecast anywhere, which is lovely for your weekend and bad for the lakes. No frost advisories yet, but if your porch plants are tender, Wednesday and Saturday nights are the ones to watch. (NWS)
Bull City By the Numbers
7 — combined points Duke has lost its last two games by · 35,018 — in the stands Saturday · 11 — Nate Sheppard catches, tying the fifth-most ever by a Duke running back · 32 — straight Duke home wins in basketball, on the line tonight · 37 — percent full, Durham's reservoirs · 90 — days of water supply, by the city's estimate · 0 — rain chances this week
What We're Reading
INDY Week on five crafters who got tired of knitting alone. Shelbi Polk's piece, out this morning, follows the founders of Makeshift Collective, who met working at Freeman's Creative and have opened a fiber-arts makerspace inside the ReCity building. There are open craft hours, pay-what-you-can classes, shared tools and a bin of donated yarn so you can try something without buying the whole kit. They're calling it a four-month experiment, through January, and plan to let the people who show up decide what it becomes next. It's a small story about a very Durham idea: make the thing first, figure out the business model with your neighbors. (INDY Week)
Durham Love Note
Every restaurant has a table it didn't plan for. The one by the window where the same three retirees eat lunch on Thursdays. The bar seat that belongs, by unspoken treaty, to the woman who reads there with a glass of red. The patio corner where two families who met over a spilled lemonade now book together.
That's what a neighborhood restaurant actually sells. Not the rigatoni, as good as it is. The rigatoni is the excuse. The product is a room where you'll see someone you half-know, and where the server remembers that your kid won't eat anything green. You can't put that on a menu, and you can't open with it. It accrues.
Durham is unusually good at growing those rooms, and we've lost a few this year, so when one takes root — downtown, in a strip center, wherever — go sit in it. Become a regular somewhere. It's the cheapest way to make a city smaller.
Much love, Durham. 🐂
