Happy Tuesday, Durham. If you're reading this from a folding chair at a block party, carry on — it's National Night Out, and the whole city is on its front porch tonight. The rest of the week keeps the energy: a free concert in the park Friday, jerk chicken perfuming all of downtown Saturday, Duke soccer easing us toward fall, and the Bulls rolling home next week with fireworks in the bag. What's Up Durham
🇯🇲 The NC Jerk Festival returns Saturday. CaribSplash's annual celebration of Caribbean culture takes over Durham Central Park Saturday afternoon — jerk everything, live music on the cultural stage, a kid zone, and a beer garden, all free. Restaurant Spotlight: Dame's Chicken & Waffles
Some Durham institutions get so famous the city forgets to talk about them. Time to fix that: Dame's has been the Bull City's chicken-and-waffle answer for over fifteen years, and it is still — still — one of the most satisfying plates in town.
The formula sounds simple and isn't: seasoned, crisp-fried chicken laid over scratch waffles (sweet potato, gingerbread, classic — the rotation is part of the fun), crowned with Dame's real signature, the shmear — flavored sweet-cream butters that melt down into the whole plate and make the sweet-savory argument better than any food writer ever could. It's the dish out-of-town guests get told about in the car from the airport, and the reason the wait on a weekend stretches down Driver Street.
And that's the other thing: Dame's holds down 455 S Driver St in East Durham — a few blocks from a certain sandwich line we wrote about last week. That corner of the city is quietly running the best one-two food punch in Durham right now. Make a weekend of it: Ideal's Saturday, Dame's Sunday, opinions forever.
Pro tip: weekend brunch is the show, but a weekday visit skips the wait — and whatever you order, do not skip the shmear upgrade. It's the whole point.

Bulls Corner
Quiet week at the DBAP — the Bulls are on the road — but circle next Tuesday: Memphis comes to town August 11 for a six-game set, and the back half is loaded, with fireworks both Friday and Saturday nights (August 14–15).
