August 6, 2026 — Thursday Edition
Happy Thursday, Durham. The weekend forecast calls for jerk smoke over Central Park, ninety minutes of well-earned 90s nostalgia at the Carolina Theatre, and one last quiet stretch at the ballpark before the Bulls roll home Tuesday with a fireworks doubleheader in their luggage. August is not coasting. Let's get into it.
What's Up Durham
🇯🇲 Saturday belongs to the Jerk Festival. CaribSplash's NC Jerk Festival takes over Durham Central Park from 3 PM Saturday — jerk everything, live music on the cultural stage, a kid zone, and a beer garden, all free. The smell alone will pull you downtown. (CaribSplash)
🎸 The Wallflowers play Durham Sunday night. Jakob Dylan brings the band to the Carolina Theatre — full story in the spotlight below.
⚾ The Bulls are home Tuesday — and the weekend after is loaded. Memphis comes to the DBAP August 11–16, with fireworks BOTH Friday and Saturday nights (August 14–15). Details in Bulls Corner. (Bulls)
⚽ Duke soccer doubles up Saturday. The women host pro side Carolina Ascent FC and the men open against UNC Wilmington, both at Koskinen — an easy, breezy way to remember that fall sports are almost here. (GoDuke)
Event Spotlight: The Wallflowers at the Carolina Theatre
Somewhere in your brain, fully intact, is every word of "One Headlight." Sunday night, you get to prove it.
The Wallflowers — Jakob Dylan's Grammy-winning outfit, thirty years past the album that soundtracked every 1996 car ride — roll into the Carolina Theatre Sunday at 7 PM. And before anyone files this under nostalgia act: the band has stayed sneaky-great, Dylan remains one of the most understated songwriters of his generation, and the newer records hold up next to the hits they'll absolutely still play. "6th Avenue Heartache" in Fletcher Hall's velvet-seat acoustics is going to land.
That's the other reason to go: the room. Fletcher Hall is Durham's grand old theater — seated, intimate, gorgeous sound — which is exactly how you want to take in a band built on songcraft rather than spectacle. It's the rare big-name show you can attend on a Sunday and still make it to work Monday feeling like you won the weekend.
Pro tip: it's a 7 PM Sunday start — early enough for a proper pre-show dinner downtown. Make a full evening of it, and give the opener a chance; Carolina Theatre bookers have earned the trust.

Food & Drink Roundup
Jerk Festival strategy, since you asked. Arrive hungry and pace yourself — the move is small plates from many vendors, not one big plate from the first tent. Hit the beer garden between rounds, keep water in rotation, and don't sleep on whatever the dessert tents are doing. Saturday, 3 PM, Central Park.
The Sunday nightcap is a rooftop. If the Wallflowers leave you wanting one more act, the DRIFT rooftop DJ series does Sunday evenings at The Velvet Hippo — a two-block walk from the theater and the correct final scene of the weekend. (Discover Durham)
Corn has entered its imperial phase. The market tables are stacked with it, it costs almost nothing, and for the next few weeks the only wrong way to cook it is not cooking it. Grill it in the husk, char it for salad, or eat it raw off the cob standing over the sink — we don't judge, we participate.

Bulls Corner
One more quiet weekend, then the good stuff: Memphis visits the DBAP Tuesday through Sunday (August 11–16), and the club scheduled the payoff up front — fireworks Friday night AND Saturday night, August 14–15. It's stretch-run baseball with the second-half race tightening, and a double-fireworks weekend is the kind of thing you plan a whole Saturday around. Weeknight tickets are the easy get, as always. (Schedule)
Weekend Weather
Peak-August playbook: low 90s, humid, and a daily audition for an afternoon thunderstorm. The Jerk Festival starts at 3 PM Saturday — prime pop-up-storm hours — so keep one eye on the radar, claim pavilion shade early, and treat a passing shower as a snack break, not a cancellation (it's rain-or-shine country out there). Sunday's marquee events are indoors and air-conditioned, which is the most attractive thing we can say about any venue in August.
What We're Reading
The Carolina Theatre on the Wallflowers' return. The theater's own writeup on Sunday's show — a good primer on where the band's been since the radio years, and why this tour has been getting warm reviews. Read it, then go dig out the CD booklet you definitely still own. (Carolina Theatre)
Durham Love Note
This weekend runs on scent and sound. Saturday it's allspice and smoke drifting off Central Park, steel drums carrying down Foster Street, a whole city following its nose downtown. Sunday it's velvet-seat quiet, then that first guitar line everybody in the room has known for thirty years, sung back by a few hundred neighbors who were all sixteen once. Durham doesn't separate its senses — it layers them, weekend after weekend, until the city itself starts to feel like a song you know by heart. Go add a verse.
Much love, Durham. 🐂
