Happy Tuesday, Durham. June has arrived in full — the kind of week where Anne and I keep “talking about” eating in and then end up walking to dinner anyway. Hamilton is taking its last bow downtown, Juneteenth season is warming up across the city, and the World Cup kicks off this Thursday with the whole world suddenly keeping European hours. Let’s get into it.

With Juneteenth season opening up, it felt right to point you toward a place where two heritages share a plate. Boricua Soul, tucked into the American Tobacco Campus, is the work of husband-and-wife team Toriano and Serena Fredericks — he brings the Southern soul-food side, she brings the Puerto Rican — and the menu is the happy argument between the two.

It started as a food truck in 2015 and grew into a brick-and-mortar room at ATC in 2019, and somewhere along the way became one of the most quietly beloved tables downtown. Order the pernil — slow-marinated pork shoulder — over yellow rice and pigeon peas, with mac ‘n’ cheese and collards on the side, or go handheld with the BBQ-pork empanadas and a basket of tostones. It’s comfort food with two passports, and it does not miss.

It’s also about ninety seconds from the DBAP, which makes it the ideal “eat first, walk to the ballgame” move once the Bulls are back home next week.

Insider tip: lunch hours most days, dinner Wednesday through Saturday, closed Sundays — plan around it.

It’s officially patio-and-pitcher season. With mid-80s sun on the way this weekend, this is the moment Durham’s outdoor tables earn their keep. A garden table, a warehouse-district yard, or a porch you don’t have to leave — go sit outside. June rewards it.

The Bulls are on the road this week before heading home. They’re back at the DBAP starting Tuesday, June 16 for a six-game homestand against the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp — so now’s the time to grab tickets for a midweek game, when the lines are short, the parking’s easy, and a warm June night under the lights does most of the work.

Summer’s settling in: highs in the mid-80s with plenty of sun Friday through Sunday, low-to-mid 60s overnight. Translation — patio weekend, full stop.
