Happy Thursday, Durham. August lands this weekend, and the city is greeting it the right way: one last blast of home baseball (with wizards and fireworks, naturally), a free fiesta filling Durham Central Park on Sunday, and block-party season officially on deck. Summer's second act starts now. Let's get into it.

Here's the best free thing you can do this weekend: show up hungry to Durham Central Park on Sunday afternoon.

Durham Fiesta Latina takes over the park from noon to 4 PM with a celebration of the Latino communities that help make this city what it is — Latin cuisine across the spectrum, live music that will not permit standing still, and folkloric dance performances in full color. It's the kind of afternoon where you arrive for the food, stay for the dancing, and leave having learned something about your own city.

And that's the real draw. Durham's Latino community is one of the fastest-growing threads in the city's fabric — you taste it in the taquerias we never stop writing about, hear it up and down our playlists, see it in every school and on every jobsite.
