September 10, 2026 — Thursday Edition
Happy Thursday, Durham. The last baseball weekend of the year is here — fireworks Friday, fireworks Saturday, Fan Appreciation Day Sunday — and the city has stacked the days around it: a free movie in the park, the Festival for the Eno's one-time downtown edition, a plant-based food festival, and the 98th Eagle-Aggie Classic, which is the spotlight this week because nothing else in Durham sounds like it. Let's get into it.
What's Up Durham
🦅 Eagles vs. Aggies, Saturday night at O'Kelly-Riddick. NCCU hosts NC A&T at 6 PM in the 98th meeting of the rivalry — Parent & Family Weekend, packed house, the best atmosphere on any Durham sideline all year. This is the spotlight; full story below. (NCCU)
⚾ Three games left at the DBAP. Two of them end in fireworks. First Responders Night Friday, Hockey Night Saturday, both at 6:45 with the sky show after, then Fan Appreciation Day Sunday at 1:05 to close the 2026 home schedule. Bulls Corner has the details; your job is to be in a seat. (Bulls)
🌊 Festival for the Eno, downtown for one year only. Saturday from 1 to 5 PM the Convention Center plaza hosts the Eno River Association's 60th-anniversary festival — music, vendors, river folks — followed by a 7:30 concert at the Carolina Theatre. Next year it moves to spring for good. (INDY Week)
🎬 Free movie in the park tomorrow: My Name Is Pauli Murray. The Museum of Durham History and the Pauli Murray Center screen the Peabody-winning documentary about Durham's own trailblazing legal mind at Durham Central Park, 7 PM Friday. Bring a blanket and a neighbor. (Durham Central Park)
Event Spotlight: The Eagle-Aggie Classic
Some rivalries are about football. This one is about everything else, with football as the excuse.
NC Central vs. North Carolina A&T has been played 97 times, and the 98th lands at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium Saturday at 6 PM. It's the rivalry that splits families across the Piedmont — Eagles in Durham, Aggies in Greensboro, cousins on both sides — and on Central's campus it lands on Parent & Family Weekend, which means the tailgates start early, the bands play like it's a competition (because it is), and the noise from Fayetteville Street will carry well past the stadium.
The Eagles come in 1-1 after a 27–6 home-opening win over Elizabeth City State, with a freshman quarterback, Nelson Layne, who's already thrown for two touchdowns and run for two more in his first two college games. That's the on-field story. The off-field story is the halftime show, which at an HBCU classic is not an intermission — it's a second main event. If you've never seen the Sound Machine at full volume from the home stands, you are about to understand why people buy tickets to games they don't otherwise watch.
Pro tip: get there for the tailgate — the lots around the stadium are the real pregame — and stay in your seat at halftime. Duke is away at Illinois Saturday, so this is the only football in town; parking near campus will be tight, so arrive early or park near Fayetteville Street and walk. Wear maroon.
📅 Saturday, September 12 · 6 PM · O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium, NCCU campus (Tickets & info)
Food & Drink Roundup
VegFest takes over Central Park Sunday. Triangle VegFest brings plant-based food vendors, contests, face painting, and a family zone to Durham Central Park from noon to 5, pay-what-you-can. Even the committed carnivores tend to leave with something they'd order again. (Triangle on the Cheap)
Last call for the secret sandwich window. The password-only, Instagram-clue pop-up the INDY profiled last month runs Monday through Wednesday next week and then it's gone (final day September 17). Consider this your last nudge. (INDY Week)
Ballpark-week pairings. Ment's $5 slushies run through Sunday for every home game; East of Texas is a five-minute walk from the gates if you want brisket before first pitch; and Blackwell Street's patios will have the postgame fireworks crowd both nights. Eat early, or eat late — the middle is a line.

Bulls Corner
Three left. Friday is First Responders Appreciation Night with fireworks after; Saturday is Hockey Night, Champ the Bat Dog's last appearance of the year, and the final fireworks of 2026; Sunday is Fan Appreciation Day, first pitch 1:05, gates at noon, Kids Run the Bases after the last out. Weeknight gates open at 5:30. Whatever the standings say, the last Sunday at the DBAP is one of the city's quiet traditions — half the crowd stays in their seats after the final out just to look at the field a little longer. Go be part of that. (Bulls schedule)
Weekend Weather
Summer's not quite done: around 90 today and Friday, mostly sunny, with a 40 percent shower chance sneaking in late Friday night — the fireworks should be fine, but the walk to the car might not be. Saturday is the coin flip at 87 with about a 50 percent chance of showers, which puts the Eno festival, the Eagle-Aggie kickoff, and Saturday's fireworks all under the same umbrella. Pack one. Sunday clears out and heats back up to 91 — sunscreen for VegFest and the finale.
Bull City By the Numbers
98 — Eagle-Aggie Classics after Saturday · 3 — Bulls home games left · 2 — fireworks nights · 60 — years of the Festival for the Eno · 1:05 — Sunday's final first pitch · $5 — a slushie at Ment · Sep 17 — the secret sandwich window's last day
What We're Reading
INDY Week on the hyperlocal zines making Durham come alive. A tour of the photocopied, hand-folded, stapled-in-the-kitchen publications documenting this city block by block — the ancestors of newsletters like this one, and honestly still cooler. Great read before Saturday's festival, where a few of these makers tend to have tables. (INDY Week)
Durham Love Note
"Fan Appreciation Day" is a promotion. But watch what actually happens Sunday: the usher who's worked the same section since the park opened gets a hug from a kid who's grown a foot since April, the guy who keeps score by hand in the upper deck shakes hands with the beer vendor, and after the last out nobody moves for a minute. The team is thanking the fans, but it's the fans thanking each other — for showing up on Tuesdays in June when it was 94 degrees, for the wave that never quite worked, for a summer measured in innings. That's what a city looks like when it's paying attention to itself. Stay in your seat for the minute. Then go hug an usher.
Much love, Durham. 🐂
