Happy Thursday, Durham. This weekend, one of the most important buildings in the city stops being a backdrop and becomes the show — ADF is turning the Mutual Tower into a stage, with Durham dancers on the bill. Add a free concert in the park, a treasure hunt, and a Bulls team winning dramatic baseball in Florida, and you've got a proper mid-July weekend. Let's get into it.
What's Up Durham
💃 ADF enters its final stretch. The American Dance Festival's 93rd season runs through July 25, and the back half of the calendar is loaded — this weekend's site-specific Mutual Tower performances (see the spotlight) and Paul Taylor Dance Company next week. If you've been meaning to catch something, the window is closing. (ADF)
⚾ The Bulls opened the Jacksonville series with extra-innings drama. A free win in bonus baseball to start the road set — the good vibes from the holiday homestand appear to be traveling well. Home again Friday the 17th. (Bulls)
🚧 Heads up, west Durham drivers: the Hillandale Road/W. Club Boulevard intersection closes to through traffic starting Friday at 7 PM for sewer-line work, on top of the ongoing Ninth Street lane closure. Give yourself a few extra minutes this weekend. (City of Durham)
Event Spotlight: ADF at the Mutual Tower
For one weekend, the tallest chapter of Durham's history becomes a stage. Choreographer and site artist Stephan Koplowitz has built a performance specifically for the Mutual Tower — the home of NC Mutual Life Insurance, the beating heart of Black Wall Street and, for decades, the tallest building in town. The work treats the tower as both stage and subject: a piece about enterprise, memory, and what a building can hold.
The performers make it even more Durham: ADF students form the core of the ensemble, joined by Durham community dancers — your neighbors, dancing your history — with an original score by Andy Hasenpflug.
There are four chances to catch it: Saturday at 1 and 3 PM, Sunday at 11 AM and 1 PM. Site-specific work like this doesn't tour, doesn't transfer, and doesn't come back — it exists for one weekend, in one building, in one city. Ours.

Biergarten season is peaking. Guglhupf's café turns into a proper biergarten in the early evenings — German bakery by day, beer-and-bratwurst garden by night, open till 8. A long summer evening under the trees with a liter of something cold is one of Durham's most reliable pleasures. (Guglhupf)

Bulls Corner
The Bulls are in Jacksonville through the weekend, and they announced themselves with an extra-innings win in the series opener against the Jumbo Shrimp. The road trip runs through mid-month; the club is back at the DBAP Friday, July 17 vs. Charlotte, with fireworks on the calendar. Plan accordingly.
Weekend Weather
Standard-issue mid-July: hot afternoons, usable mornings and evenings. The Mutual Tower performances are midday, so bring water and sunscreen; everything else on the list is evening-friendly. Keep an eye out for the classic 4 PM pop-up thunderstorm — it's that time of year.

Durham Love Note
Every city has buildings it walks past without seeing. The Mutual Tower has stood over downtown for so long that it's easy to forget what it is: proof, in steel and glass, of what Black Durham built when the odds said otherwise. This weekend, dancers — including regular Durham folks — will move through it and make everyone look up again. That's the thing about this city: our landmarks aren't museum pieces. They get danced in. Go look up.
