Happy Tuesday, Durham. Summer didn’t ease in this year — it kicked the door open. We’re staring down an upper-80s week, the kind of humidity that fogs your sunglasses on the walk to coffee, and a city that somehow gets busier the hotter it gets. World-class dance is taking over Duke, the U.S. plays a win-and-advance World Cup match Thursday, and the coldest oysters in town are $1.50. Let’s get into it.
What’s Up Durham
🩰 The American Dance Festival is in full swing. One of the most important dance festivals on the planet quietly happens in our backyard every summer — 49 performances through late July at Duke’s Reynolds and Page theaters. This weekend’s headliner is a joy-bomb (more in the Short List). If you’ve never gone, this is the summer to fix that. (ADF)

🍺 Fullsteam’s second taproom is taking shape at the Powerplant. Sean Lilly Wilson’s fiercely-Durham brewery is building out a second spot inside the restored Powerplant building at American Tobacco — finally a great tenant for that gorgeous brick corner. (Discover Durham)
☕ A public café is coming to Dillard Co-Living. A new café at the Dillard Co-Living project will serve coffee, tea, and prepared food — and it’s open to everyone, not just residents. The kind of small, neighborhood-stitching spot Durham does well. (Bites of Bull City)
Restaurant Spotlight: Alley Twenty Six
When it’s 89° and sticky, the smartest table in Durham might be a barstool. Alley Twenty Six — the downtown cocktail bar tucked where Chapel Hill Street bends — has been quietly setting the standard since 2012, when it became the first bar in North Carolina named a James Beard finalist for Outstanding Bar Program. It’s exactly the room you want on a hot week: dim, easy, and dead serious about a cold drink.
The cocktails are the headline — spec’d with the precision of a kitchen, built around whatever’s in season, and delivered without an ounce of attitude. But the move right now is the raw bar. Their $1.50 oyster hour (4–5 PM, Tuesday through Friday) is one of the great deals in town: East Coast oysters — North Carolina when they can get them — shucked to order with mignonette and lemon, next to a drink that costs more than the oysters and is worth every cent.
Come for the happy hour and stay for the after-dark version of the room, when the lights drop and the bartenders get loose with the off-menu stuff. It’s a date spot, a nightcap spot, and a “we just felt like it” spot all at once.
Insider tip: get there right at 4 for the oyster hour before the bar fills — and if you can’t decide on a drink, name two flavors you like and let the bartender run.

Food & Drink Roundup
High Horse is bringing live-fire cooking to Hub RTP. A new restaurant built entirely around an open flame — wood smoke, char, the primal stuff — is headed to the Horseshoe at Hub RTP. Worth the short drive south when it lands. (NC Triangle Dining)
Peaches are in. The farmers’ market is hitting its summer peak — peaches, tomatoes, corn, and basil all at once. Buy a bag of peaches you can’t possibly finish, then turn the survivors into a cobbler. A June problem with a July solution. (Durham Farmers’ Market)
It’s a cold-raw-bar kind of week. If you can’t get to Alley Twenty Six (see the Spotlight), the city’s other raw bars are all leaning into the cold-shellfish-and-colder-drink summer special. The hotter it gets, the better it tastes.

Bulls Corner
The Bulls are on the road this week — a six-game set against the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park, June 23–28 — before they’re back at the DBAP on June 29 to open a homestand. Worth circling the back half of next week: the July 4 fireworks at the ballpark are one of the best free shows of a Durham summer.
Weekend Weather
Hot and sticky, with a sky that keeps you guessing. Friday tops out around 85° with afternoon storms; Saturday is the pick of the weekend — 86°, partly sunny, mostly dry; and Sunday climbs to a swampy 89° with another afternoon thunderstorm likely. Game plan: farmers’ market early Saturday before the heat, save muggy Sunday afternoon for the air-conditioned Nasher or an ADF matinee, and let the evenings — when it finally breaks — belong to a patio.

Durham Love Note
The longest days of the year just rolled past, and we’re officially in the stretch of summer where the light hangs around forever and nobody’s in a hurry to head inside. There’s something about right now — the heat finally cracking around 8 PM, the patios filling, somebody’s string lights flickering on, a table laughing two doors down. It’s the season that rewards staying out later than you meant to. So this week: walk somewhere for dinner, sit outside, order one more thing for the table. The night’s not going anywhere. Neither are we.
