Happy Thursday, Durham. It’s a big one. Saturday marks 45 years since North Carolina’s first-ever Pride march stepped off right here, the World Cup turns win-or-go-home, pro softball is in town for the weekend, and the Bulls are about to come home. The forecast’s still sticky, but the calendar more than makes up for it. Let’s get into it.
What’s Up Durham

Event Spotlight: “Our Day Out” — 45 Years of Pride in Durham
Forty-five years ago this Saturday, a few hundred people marched through downtown Durham in what became the first LGBTQ+ Pride march in North Carolina history. It didn’t begin as a celebration — it grew out of grief and defiance after a brutal attack on a gay man — and the marchers walked anyway, in public, in 1981 North Carolina. That took a kind of courage worth pausing to honor.
This Saturday, the LGBTQ Center of Durham marks the anniversary with the “Our Day Out” Remembrance March & Resource Fair. The march steps off from CCB Plaza at 10 AM (yes, by the big bull) and ends at the LGBTQ Center on Hunt Street, where speakers, community groups, and a resource fair run until 2 PM. It’s the closing event of Durham’s Pride season — part remembrance, part block party, fully Durham.
Whether you march, cheer from the sidewalk, or just swing by the fair, it’s one of those mornings that reminds you what kind of town this is: one that shows up for its people, and remembers the ones who made the showing-up possible. Pro tip: it’s an outdoor morning in late June — get there early, hydrate, and the Hunt Street end has shade and the resource fair when the sun gets to be too much.

Toast 45 years this weekend. Pride’s anniversary is a fine excuse to post up at a neighborhood bar Saturday afternoon and raise one to the people who marched in 1981. Durham’s bars do welcoming better than almost anywhere — pick yours.
A downtown happy hour kicks off the softball. Ahead of the AUSL pro-softball series, participating downtown spots are running a happy hour tonight (Thursday) from 5 to 6 PM — a good, low-stakes reason to be out midweek. (AUSL)

Bulls Corner
The Bulls finish their road set at the Norfolk Tides this week (through Sunday) and come home to the DBAP on Monday, June 29 to open a homestand. The one to circle: the July 4 fireworks night at the ballpark, a Durham summer institution and one of the best free shows in town.
Weekend Weather
Still summer, still sticky. Look for highs in the mid-to-upper 80s Friday through Sunday, with the usual late-June chance of an afternoon thunderstorm — Sunday looks most likely to get one. Plan the Pride march and farmers’ market for the cooler morning hours, keep an eye on the radar for afternoon plans, and save the muggiest stretch for somewhere with AC.
